The Chief Executive Officer of Gearbox Software Randy Pitchford has said that Gearbox is “very keen” on supporting cross-platform play in Borderlands 3, while publisher 2K Games has been somewhat more circumspect about it: “Cross-play is something we’re looking at closely, but we don’t have anything to confirm or announce at this time,” a rep said in April.
A tweet from the Borderlands official account suggested that cross-play was going to be a go. The tweet invited fans to “a celebration of togetherness” on the 16th of July. Surely this suggests cross-play?
However, this isn’t what it turned out to be. Pitchford finally confirmed that cross-play will not be introduced at launch.
“Some folks may be speculating that this thing tomorrow maybe about cross-play. Tomorrow’s thing is awesome but *not* about cross-play. But, Good News: We are committed to supporting cross-play for Borderlands 3 with our partners as soon as practicable after launch,” he tweeted.
“To be clear, there will not be any cross-play functionality in Borderlands 3 at launch as we work closely with our partners to create a positive cross-play experience as soon as practicable. We are committed to cross-play on as many platforms as possible.”
So this leaves the announcement unanswered however the speculation of cross-play at launch has been answered. unfortunately we won’t be seeing cross-play at launch however, we will see it in the near future.
