This week, the Epic Games Store brings us Darksiders: Warmastered Edition and Darksiders 2: Deathinitive Edition developed by Vigil Games, and Steep developed by Ubisoft Annecy.

#1 – Darksiders: Warmastered Edition

Darksiders originally released in 2010, was remastered in 2016, giving it a new lease of death, so to speak. The game consists of hack-and-slash gameplay based around ‘War’, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. War is blamed for the premature apocalypse on Earth, he barters to be placed back on Earth albeit 100 years in the future, as he searches for the other Horsemen, and the culprit who caused the apocalypse.

The gameplay of Darksiders is excellent, the controls feel tight and the combat is responsive, the game has a good range of enemies and some titanic boss fights akin to God of War. The game includes lots of puzzles and dungeons to work you way through and gives you a lot of different environments to explore.

#2 – Darksiders II: Deathinitive Edition

Darksiders II originally released in 2015, was remastered in 2018, similar to it’s predecessor, was re-released as the Deathinitive Edition. The game follows on from the story of the first game, this time following the story of ‘Death’, one of the other Horsemen, as he tries to prove the innocence of War, and resurrect humanity, undoing his brother’s supposed crimes.

The gameplay is obviously going to feel familiar to players of the first game, but Darksiders II brings a lot more areas and dungeons to be explored, with a large array of puzzles to solve along with them.

#3 – Steep

Steep was developed by Ubisoft Annecy, a French studio who worked on games such as The Division and some of the Assassin’s Creed games. The game is based around winter sports such as snowboarding and wingsuiting.

Steep has quite a repetitive, yet fun gameplay loop. The game gives an open world multiplayer sandbox with a ‘play your way’ style, meaning you can just explore the world yourself or compete in challenges against your friends.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the games on offer here are excellent, 2/3 of the Darksiders trilogy are available for free. And Steep is a simple yet fun game to pick up for free, and maybe even pick up some of the DLC on the cheap!
