2019. What a year it has been for us gamers! Plagued with some of the biggest controversies the gaming community has ever seen and some of the biggest blunders and scandals, it’s fair to say it’s been a rough year for gamers. That’s not to say that we haven’t had our fair share of amazing releases to keep us satisfied like the Resident Evil 2 remake or The Division 2.
So what can we expect from 2020? Well, there are some big-name titles that have been announced for release in the new decade. To say the least, I’m pretty excited about a lot of them! So here is my top 5 list of upcoming releases for gaming in 2020.
1. Cyberpunk 2077
Coming from a beloved studio that goes by the name CD Projekt Red. We’ve seen titles from this studio such as The Witcher series of games, which blew up in popularity with the release of The Witcher 3. A fan-favourite RPG that really hit the ball out of the park with its amazing graphics and vibrant open world. Well CD Projekt Red will be returning with what’s expected to be another smash hit in the year 2020 with a title called Cyberpunk 2077. This game has been speculated about for ages and let’s just say that the fans are HYPED. With household names such as Keanu Reeves starring in the game. This one should be great.
2. Minecraft Dungeons
Minecraft is a classic in the year 2019. With over 176 million copies sold worldwide, this game has been a smash hit year after year. All this time later and Minecraft shows no sign of falling out of favor with the fans and with recent spikes in popularity due to the YouTube community and Pewdiepie.
Minecraft Dungeons is a spin-off to the main title and is an isometric cave sprawler type game. This game is set in the same universe as the beloved Minecraft, it also rocks a really similar art style to the classic version. However, this game has been developed by Mojang in Unreal Engine 4. With stunningly beautiful graphics and a whole new viewpoint on the Minecraft series this will surely be a success and we can only wait and see at this point!
3. Half-Life: Alyx
People across the world were shocked to hear that the Half-Life series would be enjoying a new entry in the year 2020. With fans long being left disappointed with the lack of news of any continuation of the much-beloved franchise. Although Half-Life: Alyx is not a sequel of any kind and will not be continuing the main story where fans where left. It is set as a prequel of sorts, and will be featuring the same characters that we’re used to, such as Alyx and her father Eli Vance.
The twist to this game is that it’s a Virtual Reality title. Yeah, it’s pretty obvious that Valve was going to do this one day. With their heavy investments in VR across the board with SteamVR, it was only a matter of time before we were going to be introduced to a Valve IP with VR features. This is likely due to the release of the Valve Index which is Valve’s own VR headset.
Half-Life: Alyx will be similar in length to Half-Life 2 as it is classed as a full-length Half-Life game and will be set between Half-Life 1 and Half-Life 2.
4. Resident Evil 3 Remake
This year was full of success when CAPCOM decided that they were going to remake the much-beloved Resident Evil 2. For fans of the franchise, this is amazing news and it’s likely that we will see some more remakes in the future. Personally, I would like to see Resident Evil 4 received the remake treatment sometime soon. It’s expected that this game will release in April of next year and will also be bundled with Project Resistance, the previously announced asymmetrical multiplayer take on the series.
Resident Evil is an amazing franchise and has fans across the world, it makes me wonder what we can expect to see CAPCOM pull off in the future, when will we see Resident Evil 8 or are we going to be hitting the remakes for a while longer. Personally I’m not complaining as it’s always nice to see some nostalgic classics receive modern tweaks.
5. Halo Infinite
In 2020, 343 Industries will treat the fans to ‘Halo Infinite’. This is essentially Halo 6, and lets me say it look amazing! It’s been a while since we have seen a brand new entry into the Halo series and now is a perfect time.
Halo: The Master Chief Collection was recently updated by adding Halo: Reach which itself was a fan-favorite among the series, with some updates, tweaks and also being brought over to PC for the first time since Combat Evolved in 2001! The Halo series is currently one of the most hyped, fans have been left disappointed with releases such as Halo 5: Guardians and it seems that 343 Industries have listened to their fanbase and really tried to turn it around this time.
